Celebrating The Sillies

I know You delight in me. Psalm 41:11

I have one sister.

No brothers. Nor did I grow up around boys.

For the most part it was my mother, mamaw, my sister and me. And my dad.

But for the most part….Girls. And girls’ humor, I am finding, if very different than boys’ humor.

Great emphasis on very.

I was far from prepared for all of these men in my life. Two years ago it all began.  When Grant turned seven-years-old. It seemed that within the first hour of his seventh birthday, the spirit of silly came upon the child.

I confess, I am not a fan of the sillies.  The voices.  The faces.  The “funny” jokes.  Bunny ears in pictures.  The wiggles that come over his body….well, all of the time.

And not to mention…the poopy humor.  I must not forget that. Why is poo so funny to boys?  Would someone tell me?

God has refined me greatly since bearing our little offsprings.  Motherhood is nothing shy of a crash course in “Dying to Self.” And one of the biggest deaths to myself is embracing what I call The Sillies.

Not only embracing them, but celebrating them. For the longest time I deflated Grant’s every attempt to get a laugh out of me with his silly/annoying “made up” jokes or a funny faces.  But then one day, I heard the Lord whisper to me… I delight in you, Becky.  With all of your quirks.  With all of your sillies.  I rejoice and celebrate everything about you.  As a parent, do the same.

My command is this:  Love each other.  As I have loved you.  John 15:12

I can only imagine how often my behavior deserves a good eye-roll from the Father.  My silliness could easily be a disgrace to His Holy Integrity.  But He doesn’t roll His eyes.  He delights in me {Psalm 41:11}.

Delights(chaphets)to be pleased with. to take pleasure in.

I know that some of you may not have this struggle as a parent.  But if you do…Let us take “great pleasure” in our children today!  Even when The Sillies come on them.  Even when their jokes really aren’t that funny.  Let us choose to give them an honest belly laugh.  Let us give them an opportunity to express their blossoming creativity in the silliest way.

After all, the more I think about it, the fruit can’t fall too far from the tree, right?

Reflect and Respond:

What are some of the “Sillies” that you see at your house? Any funny stories out there?

Power Verse:

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. John 13:34
