Thoughts on Things Unseen

So we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things unseen; for the things which are visible are temporal [just brief and fleeting] but the things which are invisible are everlasting and imperishable. 2 Corinthians 4:18

I wish it wasn't such a struggle to NOT pick up my phone in the morning. I mean, this should be a simple fix. Don't turn it on. Keep it on sleep mode. My grocery order revision can wait.

And as MUCH as I have tried all of the above, the temptation is RIGHT THERE. Waiting to suck me into the abyss of temporal things. It begins innocently. I doubt ANYONE opens their phone to mindlessly lose an hour of their life. Today's innocent trap was my wanting to see how I slept - according to my Oura ring.

Yes, I know... this could wait. OR even better, I could just ask myself, "Becky, how did you sleep last night? Feeling good?!"

But instead, I wanted data. Hard facts. Apparently, my own instinct about my OWN body isn't quite as accurate.

And so I did. I opened Oura, which reminded me that in the New Year I want to switch from wearing my Apple watch to an old-school analog watch.

Which reminded me that Amazon Prime Black Friday began today.

Which reminded me that I had things in my cart in hopes they would go on sale.

Which reminded me that maybe other retailers started their Black Friday sales (because everyone competes with Amazon these days).

So off I went, digging into the boys' Christmas lists, and links, and lo and behold - there went an HOUR.

AN HOUR.

My Bible right beside me. A journal open with a pen resting on a blank page.

But the "visible, brief and fleeting" won out.

While the invisible, everlasting and imperishable sat nearby.

There is a solution for this madness. And it is tucked in the first four words of Paul's words.

"SO WE LOOK NOT"

It's comical how SIMPLE this is. Just DON'T look, Becky.

I need a better strategy for this problem. Maybe my phone is locked in a drawer for a while to alleviate the problem? Because if the temporal can get the first hour of my day... it will most likely have the rest of it too.

Believers, will you stand with me in the reality that we have a VERY real enemy that is BANKING on us NOT fixing our eyes on the author and perfecter of our faith?! Satan wants my attention. First.

This isn't about Amazon, this is about the ABUNDANT LIFE.

So. I repent and refocus. Remembering that heaven is my home and this world - with all of its fleeting Black Friday sales - doesn't deserve my gaze... first thing.

Here's to the unseen.
